When to Get Tested

Recognizing Strep Throat

It can be hard to tell the difference between a viral sore throat and strep throat. You should consider getting tested if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Common Strep Symptoms

Severe throat pain, pain when swallowing, fever, swollen and red tonsils (sometimes with white patches), swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth. (Note: Cough and runny nose are usually NOT present with strep).

The test is quick and simple. Our physician will use a soft cotton swab to gently brush the back of your throat and tonsils to collect a sample. The sample is then tested on-site for the strep bacteria.
Yes, strep throat is highly contagious. It spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. After starting antibiotics, you are typically no longer contagious after 24 hours.
